Seoul, possibility of Trump-Kim meeting cannot be ruled out

14 Maggio 2026

(Adnkronos) – A possible new face-to-face meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during Trump’s visit to China, but no concrete preparations are currently underway. A senior official from the South Korean Foreign Ministry told the Yonhap news agency, explaining that “the possibility cannot be ruled out,” even if “almost no preparations” have been initiated. Trump is in Beijing for a three-day visit and in recent months has repeatedly expressed a desire to re-establish dialogue with Pyongyang, despite international concerns about the advancement of North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs.

Trump and Kim met three times during the American president’s first term: in Singapore in 2018, in Hanoi, and finally in the village of Panmunjom, in the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas, in 2019. That last meeting was organized at the last minute after a message published by Trump on X, in which he proposed to see Kim “even just to shake his hand and say hello.” Since then, the North Korean leader has said he retains “good memories” of Trump, while reiterating that Pyongyang will return to the negotiating table only if Washington stops insisting on the denuclearization of North Korea.
