(Adnkronos) – Italy has underlined its solidarity and wish to boost economic and political relations with Kuwait, which has come under repeated attack by Iran during the US-Israel war against the Islamic republic that began in late February and during the shaky ceasefire in the region, foreign minister Antonio Tajani has told his Kuwait counterpart.
“I met with the Kuwaiti foreign minister Sheikh Jarrah al-Sabah, with whom I addressed the crisis in the Middle East, the blockade of #Hormuz, and the strengthening of our economic and political relations,” Tajani posted on X late Wednesday.
“I renewed Italy’s solidarity in the face of the Iranian attacks, appreciating the role of great balance and the effort to contain the escalation that #Kuwait has been taking forward for weeks,” Tajani continued.
Italy wants to continue to “play its part” in helping end the escalating hostilities in the Middle East and to making sure dialogue and safe navigation in the crucial Strait of Hormuz water resumes, “avoiding further international consequences,” Tajani wrote.
During their talks, Tajani thanked al-Sabah for Kuwait’s participation in the Rome Coalition on fertilizer access through the Strait and food security, the post noted.
Around 40 countries and international organisations including the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the Arab League and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) attended the 7 May launch at the foreign ministry of the coalition either in person or remotely.
The coalition is “conceived as an inclusive platform for dialogue and cooperation among the countries most concerned, with the aim of promoting the continuity of supply flows, improving access to fertilisers and strengthening the resilience of agri-food systems,” according to a foreign ministry statement.
