(Adnkronos) – Nineteen Kenyan citizens have died fighting on the Ukrainian front and another 32 are missing. This was stated by Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi, specifying that the number of Kenyans enlisted in the Russian army has risen to 291, compared to the previous figure of 250. The intelligence services of the East African country have made much higher estimates, believing that over a thousand Kenyans have been recruited into the Russian army after being lured with false promises of lucrative jobs. “Further details have emerged… (on people) enlisted in the Russian special forces,” Mudavadi told the Senate, adding that so far 53 Kenyan recruits have been repatriated.
“We have 19 Kenyans who may have died in Russia. And now we have a figure of 32 missing,” he concluded. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to AFP that the deaths occurred on the front line. According to Mudavadi, two Kenyans are held as prisoners of war in Ukraine.
