(Adnkronos) – Iran’s closure of the key Strait of Hormuz waterway in retaliation for the United States-Israel attacks against the country that began in late February is “a global issue” that poses “risks of further serious instability and new migration patterns” besides impacting energy and fertiliser supplies and food security in many parts of the world, Italy said on Thursday.
“The situation in the Strait of Hormuz is not just a regional issue, but a global one,” Italys’ foreign minister Antonio Tajani said as he launched the ‘Rome Coalition for Food Security and Access to Fertilisers’ at the foreign ministry in Rome.
“We want to make this new dialogue a permanent forum. Together we can make a difference,” Tajani told a ministerial meeting of the Med9 Group of countries bordering the Mediterranean as well as western Balkans and Arab League countries.
The Hormuz crisis “affects energy flows, maritime trade, food security and stability in many regions and the consequences are already apparent,” Tajani said in closing remarks to the meeting.
“The fertiliser markets are under pressure, logistics costs and insurance premiums are rising. These are real pressures on families, farmers and fragile economies in various regions, including Africa,” Tajani continued.
“There are risks of further serious instability and new migration patterns,” he said.
“We are all committed to supporting peace and dialogue. It is important to continue in this direction,” Tajani underlined.
