7 Maggio 2026

Tokyo, May 7 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average soared more than 2,500 points to exceed the 62,000 line for the first time ever in morning trading on Thursday. Tokyo stocks tracked gains in U.S. equities driven by hopes for a near-term end to fighting in the Middle East, with buying concentrated in generative artificial intelligence-related issues, market sources said. The index of 225 selected issues listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s top-tier Prime section surged 2,546.08 points, or 4.28 pct, from Friday to hit a record intraday high of 62,059.20 at 9:35 a.m. The Tokyo market was closed from Monday through Wednesday for national holidays. Issues heavily weighted in the Nikkei average, including SoftBank Group and Advantest, drew especially strong buying interest. In Tokyo currency trading, the dollar stood at 156.51-53 yen at 9 a.m., compared with 156.62-63 yen at 5 p.m. Friday. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
