(Adnkronos) – Mediterranean, western Balkan and Arab countries meeting on Thursday at the foreign ministry in Rome are teaming up to tackle the pressing global issue of food security and availability of fertilisers, which are being imperilled by the current United States-Israel war again and its closure of the crucial Strait of Hormuz shipping route, foreign minister Antonio Tajani stated.
“A coalition is being formed today to address food security and fertilisers, so that, once a lasting ceasefire is in place, essential supplies can reach many populations in need – particularly in Africa – via the Strait of Hormuz,” Tajani told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of the Med9 Group.
‘Our agriculture also needs fertilisers,” Tajani underlined.
“With strong commitment from the Med9 – which groups European Union countries bordering the Mediterranean – from Balkan countries, the Gulf states and North African countries, i.e. the Arab League as a whole, a permanent working group will be set up to monitor developments in real time in order to provide concrete solutions enabling our agriculture sectors, and above all the various countries in the region, to get the necessary supplies via Hormuz,” Tajani concluded.
