(Adnkronos) – Pedro Sanchez had said, “Spain will never stop protecting its citizens.” And after strongly denouncing in recent days the “kidnapping” of two activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla, taken in international waters and transferred to Israel, Madrid announced that it had summoned the Israeli chargé d’affaires to protest against the “unacceptable and intolerable” arrest of the Spanish activist of Palestinian origin Saif Abukeshek, whose detention, along with that of Brazilian Thiago Avila, has been extended until Sunday. Also today, the Spanish Prime Minister awarded an honorary medal to Francesca Albanese, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
Yesterday, “we again summoned the Israeli chargé d’affaires to let her know how unacceptable and intolerable it is to extend the detention of our citizen,” announced Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares in parliament.
The Spanish Prime Minister today conferred the Order of Civil Merit on Francesca Albanese “for her extensive work in documenting and denouncing violations of international law in Gaza,” according to a press release issued by his office.
