(Adnkronos) – Two former Chinese Defense ministers, Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, have been sentenced to death, with a two-year reprieve, after being found guilty of corruption. This was reported by the Xinhua news agency. The reprieve allows for the death penalty to be commuted to life imprisonment.
Specifically, a military court found Wei guilty of accepting a bribe, while Li was found guilty of both accepting and offering bribes. The sentence includes lifelong deprivation of political rights and confiscation of all personal assets.
Their sentences are the most severe imposed on high-ranking military officials since Chinese President Xi Jinping launched his anti-corruption campaign in 2012.
