Italy renews support for a stable, united Libya, UN-backed political process

6 Maggio 2026

(Adnkronos) – Italy has underlined its unwavering support for the stability and unity of Libya – which currently has rival administrations in Tripoli and in the eastern city of Benghazi – after envoy Gianluca Alberini took part in a security working group meeting on Wednesday.

“Ambassador Alberini participated in Benghazi in the SWG meeting of the Berlin Process with the ‘security track’ of the Structured Dialogue, facilitated by @UNSMIL (the United Nations Support Mission in Libya),” the embassy wrote on X.

The post referrred to a security working group meeting convened within the UN-backed Berlin Process launched by Germany in 2019 to end the conflict in Libya between its rival factions by fostering an internal process aimed at a political solution, by enforcing the UN arms embargo and forging a roadmap for enduring peace in the North African oil state – a former Italian colony.

“Italy renews its support for the unity and stability of Libya and the political process assisted by the UN,” the post added.
