(Adnkronos) – Facing polls indicating an increasingly probable victory for Democrats in the midterm elections, the White House is preparing for various types of investigations, including impeachment, that a Democrat-majority Congress could initiate starting next January. Lawyers from the White House Counsel’s Office have already begun instructing various political members of the Trump administration in 30-minute sessions which, the Washington Post reveals today, also include a PowerPoint presentation to illustrate how best to manage potential investigations.
“It’s obvious to everyone that it’s very likely,” one of the Post’s sources said, referring to the possibility that Republicans will lose control of at least one chamber of Congress in November. Hence the need to urge administration officials to be careful about what they put in writing during these briefings, which are therefore a sign of how awareness of the Republicans’ electoral problems is growing within the Trump administration, and thus the need to prepare for the worst-case scenarios.
With Donald Trump’s popularity continuing to plummet due to the economic problems caused by the war he unleashed against Iran, recent polls show Democrats with a five-point lead regarding the possibility of winning the House, a significant increase compared to the two points in February.
A Democratic majority, even if only in the House, would open a new era of investigations into his administration’s actions for Trump, not to mention the possibility of a new impeachment for the president, who was impeached twice during his first term.
Trump knows this well, and it’s no coincidence that in recent months he clearly told Republicans that they must “win the midterm elections, because if we don’t win, they will find a reason for an impeachment against me.” And several impeachment requests against Trump have already been advanced after he called for the destruction of the entire Iranian civilization.
Impeachment proceedings could also be initiated against administration secretaries, such as the one Democrats have called for against Pete Hegseth, for abuse of power, war crimes, and other illicit acts by the Pentagon chief. A move at the moment, with Republicans controlling the House, albeit by a narrow margin, purely symbolic, but which certainly sounds like a warning about what could happen in the event of a Democratic victory in November.
