The man arrested yesterday in Leipzig after running over a crowd in a pedestrian zone in the center of the German city, killing two people – a 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man – and injuring numerous others, will appear before a judge today. The suspect, a 33-year-old German citizen, married and father of one child, was still in a psychiatric facility in Leipzig until Sunday, according to broadcaster Mdr.
The man reportedly admitted himself voluntarily, while his discharge was not at his own initiative: according to BILD information, he was removed from the psychiatric facility due to aggressive behavior towards other patients. Also according to Bild, after his arrest, the suspect was taken to the university clinic in Leipzig and examined by a doctor. The latter reportedly determined that, due to his mental condition, the man is not fit for detention in prison. The man is currently hospitalized in Altscherbitz hospital.
