Japan honours Italian diplomat and ex-UNHCR chief Grandi

(Adnkronos) – Japan has awarded Italian diplomat and former head of the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR, Filippo Grandi, its prestigious Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun for his role in bolstering the country’s collaboration with UNHCR and supporting refugees. 

“Filippo Grandi, who served as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and led UNHCR until December 2025, has been awarded the Grand Cordon Order of the Rising Sun (one of Japan’s honours),” Grandi reposted on X. 

“This recognises his contributions to the development of Japan’s international refugee support, as well as to strengthening collaboration between Japan and UNHCR,” the post added.
