(Adnkronos) – Tension in Madrid after the words of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who defended the maxi-regularization of approximately 500,000 people: “Spain is a child of migration and will not become a mother of xenophobia.” Just as the socialist government claims the measure as a pillar of its progressive agenda, in the capital, dozens of migrants attempted to force their way into the Gambian embassy to obtain the vulnerability certificate required for the procedure, after spending the entire night queuing without being able to access appointments.
The certificate is one of the required elements – particularly for some categories of regularization linked to vulnerability or family conditions – but it is not the only necessary document: many applicants must also demonstrate their roots in the country, the absence of a criminal record, and the intention to work. The chaos recorded in front of diplomatic offices mainly concerns the issuance of documents by countries of origin, useful for proving identity, civil status, or personal conditions. Yesterday morning, once the available numbers were exhausted, the situation escalated: some climbed over the fence of the diplomatic mission in an attempt to obtain the certificates, generating moments of high tension.
According to El Mundo, the intervention of the National Police and municipal police allowed order to be restored and the area to be cleared, without any arrests being reported. Authorities are now maintaining a presence in the area to prevent new attempts, while throughout the country, long queues and overnight waits are putting pressure on offices and social services. The regularization has indeed caused a surge in requests, which have increased – according to Madrid’s delegate for Social Policies, José Fernández – from 1,500 to 5,500 per day.
Unions and local administrations denounce the risk of the system collapsing and demand more staff and security, criticizing a measure deemed hasty and uncoordinated. Meanwhile, the debate is heating up: Santiago Abascal, leader of Vox, accused the government of “accelerating the invasion” and denounced the ” chaotic management that puts public services under pressure,” while Elon Musk on X called Sanchez “guilty of high treason” and “a tyrant” for his migratory policies.
