North Korea, Kim praises ‘heroes’ who committed suicide to avoid capture in Ukraine

29 Aprile 2026

(Adnkronos) – North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has publicly praised the soldiers sent to fight against Ukraine alongside Russia who, rather than being captured, took their own lives by detonating their grenades. In a speech delivered in Pyongyang during the inauguration of the memorial for the fallen, Kim called the soldiers “heroes” who “unhesitatingly chose self-annihilation, a suicide attack, to defend great honor”.

“Their sacrifice, without expecting any reward, and their dedication, without awaiting any prize… this is the highest definition of our army’s loyalty – said Kim – even those who fell at the forefront of assaults, and those who tormented themselves for not having fulfilled their duties as soldiers, can be called loyal warriors of the party and patriots”.

The speech comes as South Korean sources, cited by the BBC, estimate that thousands of North Korean soldiers have been deployed to support Moscow in the Kursk region, with significant losses. This practice, suicide to avoid capture, has already been reported by intelligence and defectors and is now de facto confirmed by Kim’s own words.
