(Adnkronos) – Italy wants to strengthen the role of Latin America, a region with which it has “very strong ties”, foreign minister Antonio Tajani told a business forum taking place in the textile hub of Prato, Tuscany, on Monday.

“We want to enhance the role of Latin America, with which we have very strong ties,” Tajani said in concluding remarks to ‘Italy, Europe and Latin America: the time for a new strategic centrality. Growth prospects and Mercosur’.

“I believe we can also do a great deal in terms of legal diplomacy, in the fight against drug trafficking,” he underlined.

“All the agreements we have made are aimed at deepening cooperation. Our companies bring long-term vision and productive investments, they transfer skills and strengthen local supply chains,” Tajani added.

Over 160 representatives of the Italian private sector and companies, industrial unions from various countries in Latin America and the main Italian business associations were guests at the forum. The event came ahead of the provisional entry into force on Friday of the landmark European Union-Mercosur free trade agreement signed in Asuncion, Paraguay on 17 January.
