24 Aprile 2026

Tokyo, April 24 (Jiji Press)–Department store sales in Japan in March rose 3.2 pct from a year earlier on a same-store basis, up for the third consecutive month, the Japan Department Stores Association said Friday. All-store sales totaled 507.1 billion yen. Sales of tax-free items, available only for visitors from abroad, jumped 5.2 pct to 46.5 billion yen, marking the first increase in five months. Although the number of purchasers of such items decreased 12.3 pct, their average spending climbed by about 20 pct thanks to a weaker yen. Sales to domestic shoppers were also firm. By product, demand for spring clothes and jewelry remained strong. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
