(Adnkronos) – The two American embassy officials in Mexico City who died in a car accident in the state of Chihuahua on Sunday were actually two CIA agents who were returning, along with two Mexican officials, also killed in the crash, from an anti-drug trafficking operation. The Washington Post reveals this, recalling that President Claudia Sheinbaum yesterday announced an investigation to shed light on the matter, emphasizing that her security team had not been informed of the collaboration between the US and the government of the state of Chihuahua.
The four were returning from a meeting with Mexican officials after an operation to dismantle a drug lab in a remote area. The attorney general of the northern Mexican state, Cesar Jauregui Moreno, told local media that the Americans did not participate in the raid on the lab, described as “perhaps the largest ever located.” 40 Mexican agents participated in the operation, and only “eight, nine hours later” did the American officials arrive, he added without specifying their agency. According to investigators, the car carrying the CIA agents went off the road, plunged into a ravine, and then exploded.
Since his return to the White House, Donald Trump has been pressuring Mexico to increase action against drug cartels, with the CIA expanding its operations in the country and throughout Latin America. Although Trump has at times threatened unilateral actions against Mexican cartels, the CIA and other federal agencies have so far always reiterated that they work in collaboration with Mexican authorities.
