Many Flights Canceled in Japan for Air Traffic Control Glitch

21 Aprile 2026

Tokyo, April 21 (Jiji Press)–A glitch occurred at the Japanese transport ministry’s air traffic control system Tuesday morning, leading to the cancellations of many flights and affecting a total of about 13,900 people. Japan Airlines was informed that the system was restored around 8:15 a.m. But 53 JAL group domestic flights, mainly those to and from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, were canceled. All Nippon Airways decided to cancel 30 flights. The number of flight cancellations is expected to increase, according to sources familiar with the matter. The ministry said the glitch was first detected around 5:40 a.m. at the Kobe Area Control Center in Hyogo Prefecture, western Japan. Around 6:50 a.m., the air traffic control system at Haneda became unable to receive data from airlines. Officials from the ministry denied the possibility of a cyberattack, saying that the incident is believed to be an internal system failure. The cause of the problem is under investigation, they said.
