(Adnkronos) – Ninety people suspected of ties to the jihadist group Islamic State have been arrested in Turkey. This was announced today by the Interior Ministry in Ankara, two weeks after the shooting near the Israeli consulate in Istanbul. Authorities had already detained 198 people suspected of ties to ISIS following the attack.
Among the 90 suspects arrested in 24 of the country’s 81 provinces are “members of the terrorist organization,” people “involved in its financing,” and “suspects spreading its propaganda,” the Interior Ministry specified on X. Authorities have not officially linked these arrests to the April 7 attack in Istanbul, in which two police officers were injured. One of the three attackers, killed by police, was linked “to a terrorist organization that exploits religion,” authorities said, without explicitly naming the Islamic State.
At the end of December, three Turkish police officers were killed during an anti-ISIS operation in Yalova province. Six suspects, all Turkish nationals, were killed in clashes lasting several hours.
