Myanmar, former president pardoned, all death sentences commuted

17 Aprile 2026

(Adnkronos) – Myanmar’s former president, Win Myint, detained since the 2021 military coup, has been pardoned, according to a presidential statement, and will not be executed. “The President has granted a pardon to Win Myint,” reads a statement from the office of Min Aung Hlaing, who led the coup as military chief but was sworn in as civilian president last week.

In addition to the former president, Myanmar’s leader has commuted all death sentences with a general decree. A statement in his name declares, without however naming specific prisoners, that “death sentences will be commuted to life imprisonment.”
