Iran, Macron and Starmer announce mission for ‘lasting reopening of Hormuz’

17 Aprile 2026

(Adnkronos) – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron jointly announced from Paris the start of preparations for an international mission aimed at ensuring the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the need for a “lasting and viable” reopening of the crucial maritime route for global trade.

Macron explained that Paris and London have “already started coordinating” to create a “neutral mission, completely separate from any belligerent party,” with the aim of “supporting and securing merchant ships” in the Gulf, also announcing an operational meeting in London for next week.

Starmer added that the two countries will lead the initiative, to which “over a dozen countries” have already pledged to contribute assets. “It will be a strictly peaceful and defensive mission to reassure commercial traffic and support demining operations,” he said. “Reopening the strait is a global necessity and responsibility: we must restart energy and trade flows, reduce prices for citizens, and re-establish peace and stability.”
