(Adnkronos) – In Turkey, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who was the leader of the main opposition party, the CHP, has been sentenced to 11 months and 20 days in prison. Turkish media reported this. He was convicted by a court in Mersin, a city in southern Turkey, on charges of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as confirmed to Dpa agency by his lawyer. The sentence is not final.
The ‘incriminating’ words date back to 2014, when Erdogan was prime minister, but there are not many details. Kilicdaroglu led the CHP for more than ten years, which today has Ozgur Ozel as its leader. In 2023, Kilicdaroglu ran in the presidential elections, won by Erdogan. With Ozel, the CHP was the protagonist of the overwhelming victory in the local elections two years ago, and since then several members of the political force have been arrested as part of investigations for “terrorism” and “corruption”. The CHP leadership has often denounced what they consider politically motivated investigations.
