Germany, ‘BerlinPay’ for sustainable tourism, rewards for the most virtuous

14 Aprile 2026

(Adnkronos) –
Berlin, April 14. (Adnkronos/Dpa) – Tourists visiting Berlin will henceforth be rewarded for their ‘sustainable’ behavior. The German capital – ‘Visit Berlin’ informs – will soon propose the initiative already adopted in Copenhagen. The program, called “BerlinPay”, is expected to be launched this summer, with a focus this year on the city’s waterways, according to the agency’s website. “We make responsible behavior more visible and reward it. Those who act consciously on and near the water, for example by collecting waste, beautifying the neighborhood or supporting social projects, will receive recognition from the initiative’s participating partners: small benefits or special experiences in Berlin,” reads the website, which targets potential sponsors. Visit Berlin is still looking for partners, such as restaurants, hotels and cultural institutions, who can participate in the tourism program. The full program will be officially presented in mid-May. The BerlinPay model originated in the Danish capital, where with “CopenPay” tourists can benefit from ‘rewards’, such as free boat trips or bicycle rentals if they demonstrate, for example, that they have traveled by train instead of by plane or have otherwise adopted sustainable behaviors.
