Berlin replies to Vance, ‘the US not the EU interferes in elections’

8 Aprile 2026

(Adnkronos) – Germany rejects the accusation of interference in the Hungarian elections, launched against EU countries by JD Vance precisely during the American Vice President’s visit to Budapest a few days before the crucial vote for Donald Trump’s iron ally, Viktor Orban. “We reject the accusations made by US Vice President Vance during an event in Hungary,” German government deputy spokesman Sebastian Hille told reporters, highlighting the hypocrisy of launching accusations of interference precisely during an official visit explicitly aimed at helping the Hungarian prime minister ahead of the elections.

“I would like to point out that, since Vance complains about alleged EU interference in the elections, the US Vice President arrived in Hungary just a few days before the vote. This fact alone shows who is interfering,” the German spokesman added, as reported by Politico, thus turning Vance’s accusations back on the Trump administration. Speaking yesterday alongside Orban, Vance had said that Hungary was witnessing “one of the worst examples of foreign interference in an election I have ever seen or studied.”

And then he pointed the finger at “Brussels bureaucrats who have done everything they can to disadvantage the people of Hungary, because they don’t like the leader who actually stands up for the people of Hungary.” In short, another full endorsement from Vance, after many from Trump, for the Hungarian prime minister, champion of illiberal democracy, who is a key ideological ally of the American president in Europe.
