(Adnkronos) – Moldova has decided to finalize its withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), a Russia-dominated group that united nine of the fifteen former Soviet republics. The termination of the 1991 founding agreement, the associated protocol, and the 1993 statute was approved by 60 of the 101 members of Parliament, according to its website.
The decision comes after the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs initiated the severance of ties with the CIS, citing Russia’s continuous disregard for the inviolability of member states’ borders, including due to its war against Ukraine and its ongoing illegal stationing of troops in Transnistria, a separatist region of Moldova. The withdrawal from the CIS is also logical in view of the country’s EU candidacy, according to a statement from Parliament.
