Starmer, ‘progress after Brexit damage to economy, new summit with EU to be announced soon’

1 Aprile 2026

(Adnkronos) – “It is increasingly evident that, as the world continues along this unstable path, our long-term national interest requires a closer partnership with our allies in Europe and with the European Union.” This was stated by British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, for whom “progress” has been made on this front after the “serious damage” caused by Brexit to the economy. “The opportunities to strengthen our security and reduce the cost of living are simply too important to ignore.” “Therefore, in the coming weeks, we will announce a new summit with our EU partners. And I can tell you in advance that at that summit, the United Kingdom will not merely ratify the commitments already made at last year’s summit: we want to be more ambitious. Closer economic cooperation, closer security cooperation, a partnership that recognizes our shared values, our shared interests, and our shared future.”

Starmer then emphasized that it is not about choosing between the United States and Europe: “I do not intend to choose, because I believe it is in our interest to have a strong relationship with both the United States and Europe. However, I believe that, in terms of defense and security, energy emissions, and the economy, we need a stronger relationship with Europe. I believe this will help strengthen our relationships with the United States, because successive presidents have stated that Europe must do more in terms of defense and security. I have always argued, along with European colleagues, that we should do more. And this is not just about, for example, defense spending; it is also about how we spend, how we collaborate, and how we cooperate.”
