Mangione returns to court in NY, will ask for federal trial postponement

1 Aprile 2026

(Adnkronos) – Luigi Mangione returns to court today in Manhattan, where Judge Margaret Garnett will have to evaluate the request to postpone the start of the federal trial against the young Italian-American accused of killing UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024, from October to next January. In reality, the request is part of a complex maneuver by Mangione’s legal team, New York legal stars who are also following the third trial against Harvey Weinstein, the former Hollywood producer who is serving a 23-year sentence for rape in Rikers Island prison, trying to avoid the temporal overlap of the two proceedings, both of high media interest.

According to the New York Times, if Judge Garnett agrees today to postpone the start of the federal trial, they will also ask to delay the state trial against Mangione, which is scheduled to begin in June. And finally, they will also ask to postpone the start of Weinstein’s trial, now set for April 15.

The attempt to postpone the start of the trials is also due to the extreme complexity of the case against Mangione, who has pleaded not guilty to all charges, both at the federal and state levels. Homicide cases are usually handled by state prosecutors, and at first it seemed that Mangione would be tried first at the state level, but after Donald Trump’s return to the White House, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced federal indictments, ranging from murder to terrorism, which include the request for the death penalty, citing Trump’s decision to reintroduce the possibility of seeking capital punishment, which had been blocked by Joe Biden in 2021.
