(Adnkronos) – The United States is negotiating with Denmark an expansion of its military presence in Greenland, with the aim of gaining access to three new sites on the island, including the former American bases of Narsarsuaq and Kangerlussuaq. This is reported by The New York Times, citing the commander of the United States Northern Command, Gregory M. Guillot, according to whom the move would represent the first significant US military expansion in the Arctic region in decades and would confirm Donald Trump’s enduring strategic interest.
The United States currently has only one active military installation on the island, a remote missile defense base with a few hundred men. Guillot explained that the goal is to increase access to ports and airfields, strengthening operational capabilities in the Arctic in light of the area’s growing strategic importance.
