(Adnkronos) – Italy’s government hopes that United States mediation can end Russia’s more-than-four-year-old occupation of Ukraine and attain a “just peace” between the two countries, foreign minister Antonio Tajani said Tuesday during a visit to the war-ravaged former Soviet republic.
“It is difficult to negotiate with (Vladimir) Putin because the Russian president does not want peace, but hopes to win a war he cannot win,” Tajani said.
“We hope that US mediation can help achieve a just peace,”’ said Tajani.
Tajani was speaking during a visit to the Kiev suburb of Bucha on the fourth anniversary of the mass killings there of over 1,400 civilians and prisoners of war by Russian forces in March 2022 the start of Moscow’s full-scale invasion, according to Ukraine’s authorities.
