Nikkei Average Falls over 1,300 Points in Early Trade

31 Marzo 2026

Tokyo, March 31 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s Nikkei 225 stock average plunged over 1,300 points in morning trading Tuesday, as stocks continue to face selling amid uncertainty over the situation in the Middle East. In the U.S. market on Monday, high-tech stocks were sold amid concerns over a prolonged battle between U.S.-Israeli forces and Iran, while financial shares drew buying following last week’s decline. Tokyo stocks got off to a weak start, with selling hitting especially stocks related to artificial intelligence. Investor sentiment was also dampened by a rise in U.S. crude oil futures, market sources said. At 9:19 a.m., the key index of 225 selected issues listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Prime section stood at 50,558.91, down 1,326.94 points, or 2.56 pct, from Monday’s close.
