Macron in Japan, focus on Middle East crisis

31 Marzo 2026

(Adnkronos) – French President Emmanuel Macron will arrive in Japan today for a three-day visit that initially aimed to strengthen cooperation between Paris and Tokyo in the nuclear energy and space innovation sectors, but which will now be dominated by the war in the Middle East. Macron and first lady Brigitte will be received by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako. The French president will meet Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi tomorrow and “the crisis in the Middle East will be at the heart of discussions,” the Elysée announced. The two leaders will discuss “how we can try to find common solutions,” he added.

Japan depends on the Middle East for 95% of its oil imports and, since the beginning of the war, has been forced to tap into strategic reserves to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices.
