USA, 13 deaths in ICE detention centers since start of year, 46 since start of Trump presidency

30 Marzo 2026

(Adnkronos) – 13 people have died in ICE detention centers since the beginning of 2026, while 46 have died since the beginning of Donald Trump’s second presidency. This is the calculation made by the New York Times based on statements released by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, the agency entrusted with the main management of the deportation campaign launched by Trump, which in the last 14 months has almost doubled the number of people held in increasingly overcrowded detention centers, where detainees who often do not receive enough food, health services, drinking water, and medicines are exposed to diseases, according to family members and lawyers.

In 2025, there were 33 deaths in detention centers, the highest number since the newly formed Department of Homeland Security took over the management of immigration and border agencies in March 2003. During the four years of the Biden administration, there was an average of 7 deaths per year, similar to the eight years of the Obama administration, with 8 deaths per year. In any case, it is important to highlight the maximum number of detentions, which reached 70,000 at the beginning of the current year, as a consequence of the aggressive campaign of arrests and raids conducted by ICE and other federal agencies.
