Tokyo, March 27 (Jiji Press)–The 12 member countries of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and the European Union plan to hold a joint ministerial meeting as early as Friday, people familiar with the matter told Jiji Press. The two sides aim to issue a joint statement supporting the World Trade Organization’s reform efforts to expedite decision-making and restore its dispute settlement mechanism. The meeting will take place on the sidelines of a WTO ministerial conference in Cameroon. The CPTPP members and the EU will emphasize the importance of the WTO-centered multilateral free trade system that has been threatened by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs. They will also seek to enhance their cooperation. In November, the CPTPP members held separate ministerial meetings with the EU and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations for the first time, launching a framework of dialogue for cooperation by blocs that promote rules-based free and fair trade.
