Dollar Hits 20-Month High Close to 160 Yen in Tokyo

27 Marzo 2026

Tokyo, March 27 (Jiji Press)–The dollar briefly rose to 159.98 yen in Tokyo foreign exchange trading Friday, hitting the highest level since mid-July 2024 reflecting investor worries over the Middle East situation. At 5 p.m., the U.S. currency stood at 159.94-95 yen, up from 159.49-50 yen. The euro was at 1.1517-1518 dollars, down from 1.1552-1554, and at 184.21-23 yen, down 184.27-28 yen. Dollar buying for yen increased due to anxiety about a stalemate in ceasefire negotiations between the U.S.-Israeli side and Iran. Meanwhile, some yen buying emerged when the dollar approached 160 yen as concerns remain strong about possible market intervention by Japanese authorities to push up the yen, market sources said.
