(Adnkronos) – Today concludes the experience of the European Convoy to Cuba with the return to Italy of the European delegation, which departed last March 17 as part of the ‘Let Cuba Breathe’ campaign promoted by Aicec. The Convoy – reads a statement – represented an unprecedented international mobilization, involving activists, social and political organizations from 19 European countries and concretely contributing to the support of the Cuban population, severely affected by the economic blockade. Since its departure – by plane from the Italian airports of Rome and Milan – the mission has transported over 5 tons of medicines and sanitary materials, the result of a vast solidarity collection developed throughout Europe, destined for the Cuban healthcare system.
In Havana, the European delegation also joined the international flotilla “Nuestra América”, which arrived on March 24 after five days of navigation from Mexico, also carrying an Italian delegation. The vessels transported over 30 tons of solidarity aid, including medicines, solar panels, and bicycles, intended to support both the healthcare system and the island’s energy resilience. The reunion between the European Convoy and the flotilla represented – the statement continues – a central moment of the international mobilization, strengthening coordination between active solidarity networks between Europe and Latin America.
The return of the Convoy does not represent an endpoint, but the beginning of a new phase of the ‘Let Cuba Breathe’ campaign. The collection of solidarity aid, in fact, has never stopped in Italy and Europe, and a new mission is already planned for the end of April, with the aim of bringing further supplies and reaching an increasing number of territories on the island. Meanwhile, the mobilization also continues on the public front, concludes the statement, setting the date for April 11 in Rome, with the national demonstration organized by the National Association of Friendship Cuba Italy in defense of the sovereignty and right to life of the Cuban people.
