(Adnkronos) – Polls open in Denmark for early legislative elections. Social Democratic Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is aiming for a third consecutive term. The spotlight is on Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, from the center-right, who emerged as the main rival during the election campaign. According to polls, the vote should favor Frederiksen’s Social Democrats, who nonetheless risk their worst result in over a century, also due to discontent fueled by the cost of living.
A centrist coalition is in government, including Poulsen’s Venstre, but it is unlikely – polls say – that the alliance will survive the vote. A key kingmaker role is emerging, once again, for the Moderates of former Prime Minister and head of diplomacy, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, as it is unlikely that any single bloc will secure a majority of the 179 seats in Parliament. In the background, but not too far, are tensions with the United States over Greenland. Polls will close at 8 PM and the first results are expected this evening.
