Osaka, March 23 (Jiji Press)–Osaka High Court has accepted an appeal filed by defense lawyers in a high-profile deadly arson attack on a studio of Kyoto Animation Co., it was learned Monday. After being sentenced to death by Kyoto District Court in January 2024, Shinji Aoba, the 47-year-old defendant in the case, appealed against the verdict to an upper court the following month. The lawyers for Aoba filed an appeal against the high court decision, sources in the court said. According to the district court ruling, Aoba set fire to a studio of Kyoto Animation, better known as KyoAni, in the western Japan city of Kyoto in July 2019, burning down the building, and killing 36 of the 70 people inside the facility and injuring 32.
