(Adnkronos) – Danish Social Democratic Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is heading towards a possible third term in legislative elections, with polls still indicating her as the dominant figure in national politics, despite a decline in support for her party. On the eve of the vote, the Social Democrats remain clearly the leading force – despite a drop of almost seven percentage points compared to 2022 – also favored by the fragmentation of right-wing opposition, unable to propose a united alternative. However, the question of alliances remains open: Frederiksen could govern with left-wing parties or aim for a centrist coalition, similar to the current one with Liberals and Moderates.
Polls indicate a substantial balance between the two traditional blocs – the “red” and the “blue” – with the center-left close to a majority of seats and the right around 42%. In this scenario, centrist parties will be decisive for government formation. Frederiksen, in power since 2019, has already led both a minority government supported by the left and a broader coalition with moderates and liberals. The election campaign, initially marked by international tensions, then focused on domestic issues such as welfare, taxes, and industry. If she were to complete another full term, Frederiksen would become the longest-serving Danish prime minister since World War II.
Among the hottest topics in recent months is undoubtedly Greenland, an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. According to an investigation by public broadcaster Dr, relaunched by the BBC, Copenhagen had drawn up plans to blow up landing strips on the island in the event of a possible US invasion, in light of Donald Trump’s statements in recent months. Reports speak of emergency scenarios with the deployment of troops and medical supplies, as part of the officially joint exercises ‘Operation Arctic Endurance’ with Danish, French, German, Norwegian, and Swedish troops, whose true objective – according to the broadcaster – was preparations for a possible US invasion.
