USA, new Homeland Security secretary criticized by Republican in confirmation hearing

18 Marzo 2026

(Adnkronos) – “I wonder if someone who applauds violence against political opponents is the right person to lead an agency that has trouble accepting limits on the proper use of force.” At the opening of the confirmation hearing for his appointment as Secretary of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullin received this harsh attack from Republican Rand Paul, chairman of the committee that will vote on the nomination.

The libertarian senator, who often takes positions contrary to Donald Trump, did not hesitate to refer to his poor relationship with colleague Mullin, recalling that Mullin had called him “a snake” when speaking to a group of his constituents, stating that he “completely” understood why Paul was attacked by a neighbor, referring to an incident in 2017.

“You never had the courage to look me in the eye and tell me that for you that assault was justified, so today you can do it,” Paul said, addressing Mullin directly. In recent weeks, Donald Trump appointed Mullin to head the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE and other federal agencies under fire for their handling of anti-immigrant policy, after removing the controversial Kristi Noem.
