Cuba, Diaz Canel warns Trump, ‘aggressor will meet impregnable resistance’

18 Marzo 2026

(Adnkronos) – “Facing the worst-case scenario, Cuba is supported by one certainty: any internal aggressor will have to clash with an impregnable resistance.” This is the warning Miguel Diaz Canel addresses to Donald Trump, who continues to repeat that he can freely take the island and “do what I want with it,” insisting that “very soon we will do something with Cuba.”

In the long message published on X, the Cuban president denounced the fact that “the United States publicly threatens, almost every day, to forcibly overthrow the constitutional order and uses an unworthy pretext, the two limitations of our debilitated economy that they attack and seek to isolate for six decades now,” referring to the embargo that the United States imposes on Cuba, to which Trump has now also added the energy blockade that is bringing the island to its knees.

Diaz Canel then points the finger at the plans that the United States announces “to seize the country, its resources, its properties, and even the economy itself, which they are trying to suffocate to force us to surrender.” And against “the fierce economic war that is being applied as collective punishment against the entire Cuban people.”

Diaz Canel’s words and warning regarding ‘impregnable resistance’ came after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio deemed the market opening measures announced in recent days by Havana “insufficient,” which included the possibility for exiled Cubans to invest and start private companies on the island. And especially after the New York Times revealed yesterday that in ongoing talks between Washington and Havana, the Trump administration is setting Diaz Canel’s departure as a condition, considering him a hawk of the still revolutionary generation, without however demanding a formal change of regime, thus seeking to replicate the Venezuela model in Cuba.
