(Adnkronos) – Italy has voiced solidarity with Lebanon’s conflict-hit population and on Friday announced an airlift of 30 tonnes of essential aid items for 750,000 displaced people on top of 10 million euros of funding unveiled a day earlier by foreign minister Antonio Tajani.
“Italy stands with the Lebanese people in this difficult moment. An Italian humanitarian contribution of €10 million has been allocated to support relief efforts, alongside a humanitarian airlift carrying 30 tonnes of assistance for displaced populations, scheduled to arrive next week,” the embassy wrote on X.
“Italy remains committed to supporting Lebanon and working with partners and the United Nations to alleviate the impact of the ongoing conflict,” the post added-
The post referred to the escalating US-Iraeli war against Iran begun in late February which has reignited conflict between Israel and Lebanon’s pro-Iran militia Hezbollah.
As recently as Friday, Israel’s military said it had struck a Hezbollah operative in the Beirut area in Lebanon. The previous day, Israeli air strikes hit two buildings in central Beirut near the Lebanese government’s headquarters after Hezbollah launched its biggest rocket salvo since the start of the current warfare, drawing Lebanon more deeply into the conflict between Iran, Israel and the US, which shows no signs of slowing.
