(Adnkronos) – Italy has sent a message of condolence to Ethiopia after a massive landslide killed over 100 people in Gacho Baba district in the south of the country on Thursday following days of heavy rains which triggered the tragedy.
“The embassy is deeply saddened by the tragic news from southern Ethiopia, where a devastating landslide has claimed many lives, with search and rescue teams still working tirelessly to find survivors,” read a post on X.
“Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and the communities affected,” the post underlined.
A total 102 people are believed to have been killed in the disaster, which struck overnight on Wednesday. Recovery teams have so far retrieved 52 bodies from thick mud and debris and the death toll could rise as more landslide-hit areas are cleared amid ongoing search operations, according to local officials.
