Bolivia: drug trafficker Marset, on US most wanted list, arrested

13 Marzo 2026

(Adnkronos) – A well-known drug trafficker, Sebastian Marset, who had evaded Latin American police for years and was on the United States’ ‘most wanted’ list, has been arrested in Bolivia. A government source confirmed this, specifying that the arrest took place “today at dawn as part of a Bolivian police operation.” According to an AFP journalist, the operation involved hundreds of police officers in Santa Cruz, a city in the east of the country.

Marset, for whom the US had placed a two-million-dollar bounty for money laundering, had been on the run since July 2023 when he managed to escape from his home in Santa Cruz, on the eve of another massive operation for his capture. In addition to the US and Bolivia, Marset was also wanted by Paraguay, where an investigation had linked him to the seizure of over 16 tons of cocaine.

A great football enthusiast, Marset, who was born in 1991 in Montevideo, Uruguay, built a system to launder drug trafficking proceeds by acquiring professional lower-league football teams in Latin America and also in Europe, and in some cases even playing on the initial lineups himself.
