(Adnkronos) – Italian troops at a base in Erbil in northern Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region “are fine”, foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Thursday after an afternight strike on the base, which he said was a drone attack.
“The Italian soldiers at the base in Erbil are fine, fortunately. The attack was carried out with a drone,” Tajani told public broadcaster Tg2’s news bulletin.
“We don’t know whether it (the drone) was launched by the Iranians or, more likely, by pro-Iranian militias in Iraq,” Tajani added.
Tajani condemned the attack and said he had discussed the security situation with Italy’s ambassador to Iraq.
Iraq is seeing an increase in drone and missile attacks aimid the escalating conflict between Iran and a US-Israeli alliance, with multiple military bases and diplomatic missions having been targeted in recent days, causing concern the country could be become a flashpoint in the wider regional conflict.
