Australia, Iranian female footballers moved to safety after compromised refuge

11 Marzo 2026

(Adnkronos) – One of the Iranian female footballers who had sought asylum in Australia had a change of heart, revealed to the Tehran embassy where her teammates were hidden, and forced the Canberra government to find them another safe place. This was stated by Australian Interior Minister Tony Burke, explaining that the footballer who changed her mind preferred to return to Iran.

There were seven representatives of the women’s national football team who, during a trip to Australia, had sought refuge in the country after being accused in Iran of being ”traitors” for refusing to sing the national anthem.
