Usa Today, ‘Trump administration prepares announcement of economic agreement’

9 Marzo 2026

(Adnkronos) – While Donald Trump continues to reiterate that the communist regime in Cuba has its days numbered, the Trump administration is preparing an economic agreement that could be announced soon. Usa Today writes this, citing two informed sources who, however, do not provide precise details on the agreement, which should include an easing of travel bans to the island for American citizens. The newspaper adds that the talks foresee the departure of President Miguel Diaz-Canel, while the Castro family would be allowed to remain on the island. Furthermore, Washington and Havana would finalize agreements for the management of ports, energy, and tourism.

In recent weeks, it had emerged that, amidst threats from Trump and after the entry into force of the total blockade on oil imports which is bringing the island to the brink of collapse, Secretary of State Marco Rubio had initiated secret talks with Raul Guillermo Rodriguez Castro, Raul’s grandson, the 94-year-old brother of Fidel who, despite having left the leadership of Cuba’s communist party in Diaz-Canel’s hands in 2021, is still considered the man who holds the reins of the regime.

The 41-year-old Raul Guillermo is seen by Rubio, a 54-year-old son of Cuban exiles, as the representative of a new young generation of Cuban cadres more oriented towards business than revolutionary doctrine, Axios wrote in recent weeks. Trump later confirmed that Rubio is in dialogue with the Cuban government and that “an agreement can be reached very easily.”

The new revelations therefore seem to confirm how the Trump administration intends to proceed not with an abrupt overthrow of the communist regime, but to aim for change through economic agreements benefiting American interests. And to those who recall that the Obama administration also launched historic reforms to open relations with Cuba, sources emphasize how different Trump’s approach is, who with military intervention in Venezuela has demonstrated how he intends to restore American dominance in the Western Hemisphere.

In his speech on Saturday at the Shield of the Americas summit, the new initiative with which the White House intends to mobilize all Latin American right-wing leaders around its agenda of fighting immigration, linked to the fight against drug trafficking, Trump alluded to imminent changes in Cuba. “Cuba has reached the end of the road, they have no money, they have no oil, they only have a bad ideology and a regime that has been bad for a long time,” he said, adding however that if these “are the last moments of the life it had,” the island has “a great new life” ahead of it.”
