Middle East: 10,000 Italians repatriated amid ‘dangerous, very complicated situation’

(Adnkronos) – A total 10,000 Italians have been flown home from the Middle East amid a ‘dangerous, very complicated situation’ as the seven-day-old war between the United States, Israel and Iran widens, foreign minister Antonio Tajani said Friday, noting the “enormous effort” being made by the government to repatriate Italy’s stranded citizens.

“There are 100,000 people stuck in the Gulf and other parts of the world due to this war, of whom 10,000 have already been repatriated,” Tajani told Radio Globo.

“There is a dangerous, very complicated situation, with an enormous effort being made by the government, which is doing everything possible to bring Italians home,” he said.

“Last night, we got 50 Italians out of Tehran, and we did well because Tehran is being bombed. There are so many people to evacuate that we are increasing the number of military flights,” Tajani went on.

Italian authorities are also working to send medicines to stranded citizens who need them, Tajani said, giving the example of the Maldives.

“There are some Italians with heart disease who are in the Maldives and have run out of medication,” he said.
