(Adnkronos) – Social media banned for minors under 16 in Indonesia, where authorities speak of a “digital emergency” as the need to protect children’s online safety is now felt globally. The ban, announced today, will be effective from March 28. It will be gradually implemented and will prevent under 16s from accessing social media.
“Accounts belonging to minors under 16 on high-risk platforms, starting with YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bigo Live, and Roblox, will begin to be deactivated,” stated Communications Minister Meutya Hafid in a note. Among the threats cited are pornography, cyberbullying, online fraud, and internet addiction.
The government, the minister added, “is intervening so that parents no longer have to fight alone against the algorithm giants.” “We believe,” she claimed, “it is the best measure the government can take in the midst of a digital emergency.” And she urged: “We are doing all this to reclaim sovereignty over the future of our children.”
