Middle East: Iran crisis could have a ‘devastating’ effect on food security – UN

5 Marzo 2026

(Adnkronos) – The United States-Israel-Iran war could have a disastrous impact on hunger worldwide, as soaring fuel and transport costs will be followed by fertiliser and food price hikes, United Nations World Food Programme chief Cindy McCain warned on Thursday.

“The crisis in the Middle East could have a devastating impact on global food security,” McCain wrote on X.

“Fuel and transport costs are soaring. Fertilizer prices are next. If this situation doesn’t improve right now, food prices—and hunger—will rise, with the most vulnerable affected the most,” McCain continued.

“The humanitarian fallout of this crisis is being felt across the Middle East and beyond,” she warned.

“@WFP is already responding in affected countries, providing emergency food and cash assistance to newly displaced families – and we are ready to further scale up life-saving assistance as needed,” McCain stated.
