(Adnkronos) – The situation in Tehran is “critical” and the Italian government is looking at reducing staff at its embassy in the Iranian capital, as well assessing the best way to evacuate all Italian citizens wishing to leave the country, foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Tuesday.
“Not that many Italians want to leave, around 40, aside from embassy staff,” Tajani stated.
“Security will be tight because evacuations are more dangerous there, like in Tel Aviv…the goal is to avoid any kind of risk,” he said.
Some 60,000 Italians have been stranded abroad since Gulf countries closed their air space amid a widening regional conflict after the United States and Israel began strikes against Iranian military sites on Saturday and Iran retaliated with attacks on US allies in the Gulf and as far afield as a British military base in Cyprus.
